Iowa is a U.S. state in the Midwestern United States, a region sometimes called the "American Heartland". The Iowa Horse Council believes in trail riding as an economic asset to the regional areas in the state of Iowa, and, to ensure the future of Iowa horse trails, has created a trails committee. Four of the popular equestrian campgrounds are: Brushy Creek State Recreation Area - Webster County; Elk Rock State Park - Marion County; Lake of Three Fires State Park - Taylor County; and Nine Eagles State Park - Decatur County. The IHC encourages volunteers and supports the committee’s partnership with Iowa Department of Natural Resources in maintaining the quickly-growing popularity of trail riding. Iowa's economy began to become increasingly less dependent on agriculture, and now has a mix of manufacturing, biotechnology, finance and insurance services, and government services. The population of Iowa has increased at a faster rate than the U.S. as a whole. Iowa is a leading agriculture state with many horse properties. It has over 200,000 horses in Iowa. According to The Jockey Club which oversees the registration of Thoroughbreds nationwide, and Iowa is the fastest growing breeding state in the country (1999 figures).
